World Congress Symposias
Kurt Riitters, EFETAC landscape ecologist, co-organized symposias for two international conferences. “Landscape Change and Environmental Security” was the topic at EcoSummit 2007 held in Bejing, China, in May 2007. “Concepts and Methods of Landscape Change Assessment” was the workshop theme for the World Congress, International Association for Landscape Ecology, held in Wageningen, The Netherlands, in July 2007.
Conservation planning conference
EFETAC supported “Scientific Foundations of Conservation Planning in the Cumberland Plateau and Mountains," held November 13 and 14, 2007, in Knoxville, Tennessee.
The conference identified, summarized, and evaluated scientific information highly relevant to conservation planning in the Cumberlands. The conference steering committee included representatives from Oak Ridge National Laboratory, The Nature Conservancy in Tennessee, University of Tennessee–Knoxville, U.S. Forest Service–Southern Research Station, and National Council for Air and Stream Improvement.
Science writing seminar
EFETAC and the Southern Research Station (SRS) Science Delivery Group jointly hosted a science writing seminar on December 7, 2007, in Asheville, NC.
The seminar, entitled "Telling the Story about Forest Science," was designed to introduce writers, editors, designers, and scientists to the basics of communicating science through story and visualization. It was conducted by Neil Caudle, Associate Vice Chancellor for Research at UNC-Chapel Hill, Director for the Office of Information and Communications, and editor of Endeavors, the University’s award winning magazine on research and creative activity. Climate Change Focus Group
(2008 Forest Health Monitoring Workgroup meeting)
The Texas Forest Service and the USDA Forest Service Forest Health Monitoring Program co-sponsored the 2008 Forest Health Monitoring (FHM) Workgroup Meeting held in San Antonio, Texas, from February 11-14. The workshop theme was "Forest Health in Oak Woodlands."
EFETAC FHM Team Leader Bill Bechtold co-organized the Climate Change Focus Group, which included fellow EFETAC team members Danny C. Lee, Steve McNulty, Bill Hargrove, and Kevin Potter as presenters and panelists.
The focus group supported the agency’s global change research strategy and engaged scientists and policy makers in discussions to describe climate change and its potential threat to forest ecosystem health. Participants heard that increases in fire, extreme weather, disease, and insect events will influence forest ecosystems’ response to climate change. The session revealed ways FHM could advance climate change understanding, identify internal and external collaborative opportunities, and allocate program resources.
The session culminated with six resolutions designed to guide FHM’s future climate change efforts. Visit http://www.fhm.fs.fed.us for additional information.
Eddy Covariance Data Processing and Quality Assurance
The workshop was designed to teach proper processing techniques for assessing long-term carbon balance data. The workshop was funded by Beijing Forestry University and taught by Asko Noormets, a research physiologist with EFETAC’s Southern Global Change Program through a cooperative agreement with NCSU. The session was held in Beijing, China, September 13-27, 2008.
2nd International Conference on Forests and Water in a Changing Environment
EFETAC's Southern Global Change Program (SGCP) will host an international conference on forests and water.
The 2nd International Conference on Forests and Water in a Changing Environment will be held in Raleigh, NC, September 14-16, 2009. Discussions will focus on forest-water relations and changing environmental conditions. The goal of this symposium is to provide a forum for experts from around the world on eco-hydrology, restoration ecology, forest ecology, watershed management and global change sciences to share knowledge and research experiences, and to develop long-term international collaborations on watershed research.
