In the Spotlight

The State of the Nation's Ecosystems 2008

The State of the Nation's Ecosystems 2008The Heinz Center has released The State of the Nation's Ecosystems 2008, the second edition of a report first released in 2002. Landscape ecologist Kurt Riitters contributed to the report contents as a member of the Landscape Pattern Working Group. The Heinz Center is a nonprofit, nonpartisan institution dedicated to improving the scientific and economic foundation for environmental policy through multisectoral collaboration.

Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) Report on the Environment

EPA's Report on the EnvironmentThe EPA's 2008 Report on the Environment (ROE) provides the American people with an important resource from which they can better understand trends in the condition of the air, water, land, and human health of the United States. The report uses scientifically sound measures, called indicators, to address fundamental questions relevant to the EPA’s mission to protect the environment and human health. Landscape ecologist Kurt Riitters developed the report's landscape pattern indicator.

Landscape Analysis and Assessment Paper Wins ESRI Award

Our scientists are honored to be third place recipients of the 2007 ESRI Award for Best Scientific Paper in Geographic Information Systems, awarded by The American Society of Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing. The paper evaluates the use of ecological regions for sampling and mapping landscape patterns derived from satellite imagery.

Millennium Ecosystem Assessment - 2005

Ecosystems and Human Well-Being: Biodiversity SynthesisThe Millennium Ecosystem Assessment set out to assess the consequences of ecosystem change for human well-being and to establish the scientific basis for actions needed to enhance the conservation and sustainable use of ecosystems and their contributions to human well-being. The volume "Ecosystems and Human Well-Being: Biodiversity Synthesis" contains global maps of forest fragmentation prepared by our scientists. Read the online journal article for more information.

Compass Magazine - 2005

Compass Magazine - Fall 2005Compass is a quarterly publication of the USDA Forest Service's Southern Research Station, providing perspectives and tools to benefit southern forest resources. The Fall 2005 edition, "Forests Under Siege", features a series of articles that describe the research and assessments by our scientists.

National Report on Sustainable Forests - 2003

National Report on Sustainable ForestsForest fragmentation assessments by our scientists are contributing to a national, public dialogue on ecosystem managment. According to the authors, this first-ever accounting of 67 indicators is a fresh analysis of the condition of forests in the United States, and represents a significant step forward in providing an analysis of data that is consistent and comparable with analysis of data by other Montreal Process countries. Read the summary report for a short description of fragmentation, or browse the data report where a full analysis of indicator 5 (fragmentation of forest types) is presented.
